Use in canines
Levothyroxine sodium thyroid hormone for hypothyroidism
Indications:
Indicated for the treatment of deficiency hypothyroidism thyroid hormone of any etiology. Replacement therapy.
Dosage:
In dogs the daily dose of 0.02 mg to 0.04 mg per Kg (equivalent to 1 tablet of 0.4 mg for 10 to 20 kg of weight).
Dosage Considerations:
At the beginning of treatment start with a dose 0.02 mg / Kg (1 tablet for 20 Kg of Weight) 2 times a day.
With a maximum dose of 0.8 mg 2 times a day.
After 4-8 weeks, assess the clinical response and measure the level of T4 at 4-6 hours after the dose.
If the clinical response is positive and
1) Low Normal T4: The dose should be increased and rechecked in 4 weeks.
2) T4 Normal high or slightly higher than normal: do not change the dose and check again in 6 months.
3) 40% or more above normal: decrease dose or consider administration once a day and recheck after 4 weeks (if a daily dose leads to the previous level).
If the clinical response is negative and
1) Low normal T4: increase dose and check again in 8 weeks (dose may need to be increased again) move to dosing
3 times a day or re-evaluate the diagnosis.
2) T4 Normal high up to an increase of 40% or more over the normal range:
Reassess the diagnosis.

Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with acute myocardial infarction, thyrotoxicosis, insufficiency untreated adrenal. It should be used with caution and at a low initial dose in patients with concurrent hypoadrenocorticism (treated), heart disease, diabetes.
