Detailed information

Antiemetic for Canines, Felines and Equines

Metoclopramide have antidopaminergic activity. It depresses the chemoreceptors area but also promotes the release and increases the sensitivity of visceral smooth muscle to acetylcholine. Central control mechanisms may also be involved in its action. The pharmacodynamic effects of Metoclopramide include increasing the tone of the lower esophageal sphincter, increasing the strength and frequency of gastric contractions, facilitating gastric emptying with better coordination of pyloric relaxation and duodenal motility and decreased transit time in the proximal small intestine.
Metoclopramide acts in the digestive tract and the CNS. In the upper digestive tract Metoclopramide increases the release of acetylcholine in neurons and cholinergic sensitivity to acetylcholine receptors. Many alterations in gastrointestinal activity are due to cholinergic stimulation disorder, which explains why the metoclopramide is most effective in diseases with reduced or altered motility.
Metoclopramide is a dopamine antagonist which is beneficial in the gastrointestinal tract in which dopamine inhibits motility. Metoclopramide crosses easily the blood brain barrier where dopamine antagonism produces an antiemetic effect in the chemoreceptor stimulation area.
